THE COURSE
The Costa di Carro area is one of the most important environmental assets of South Eastern Sicily and represents a strip of territory that still maintains within it some naturalistic and landscape features that can be defined as close to natural conditions.
Today, the area between the Corvo stream and the urban perimeter of Sampieri looks like a large cliff overlooking the sea that extends for about four kilometers covered by lush Mediterranean scrub, representing a vegetation environment of great naturalistic value. To the east, the cliff slopes down towards the sea to a small sandy beach, that of Pizzillo or Costa di Carro, one of the most enchanting places on the Iblean coast. Along the easy route it is possible to observe the numerous anthropic aspects of the park: large diameter wells, artificial basins, an old maritime “traffic light” with signaling and telegraphic communication function for maritime traffic in the area in front, cottages, dry stone walls, etc.
The salient feature, however, is determined by the naturalistic aspects, with interesting geological aspects, shapes and fossils, as well as by the Mediterranean vegetation dominated by the dwarf palm and by many other plant essences, some used to produce a series of artifacts used by the farmers of the time.
